William Weld for Governor....of New York

The New York Times is reporting that William Weld, former governor of Massachusetts is planning to run again for governor, this time in New York, the state of his birth and the state he has been a resident of since 2000.

I was hoping Weld would take another stab at being governor and I'm happy at the announcement. While his candidacy will upset some more conservative folk, the Empire state is more suited to a more moderate Republican than the brand of Republicanism being bandied about in the Midwest and South. We need more pro-gay rights and pro-environment Republicans out there as leaders and Weld is that man.

Weld is probably the only potential Republican that could give NY Attorney General Eliot Spitzer a run for his money. The other main potential candidates (Sec. of State Randy Daniels, former Assembly minority leader John Faso, Lt. Gov. Mary Donahue) have very little name recognition and aren't seen as heavyweights. I think Weld is the only candidate that's going to make state Dems sit up and take notice.

Weld will just have to find a compelling message. Spitzer is seen as an insurgent in a state government that DESPERATELY needs shaking up. Weld will have to find a way to match that.

Weld is going to be a weak candidate against Eliot Spitzer. He just doesn't have the name recognition in this state that Spitzer does.

Truffle, I agree that Weld doesn't have Spitzer's name recognition but he certainly has more than just about any other potential Republican candidate that's been mentioned, save Tom Golisano. John Faso? Randy Daniels? Pat Manning? Mary Donahue? Only political junkies know who those guys are.
